Song Evaluations Criteria


  • TITLE:
  • Points will be given based on how well the title reflects the content of the song and it’s ability to capture your attention and present a unique or interesting point of view. Titles that are unoriginal, trite, corny, or difficult to remember, will be penalized.

  • CONCEPT:
  • Concept is the idea of the song. The songwriter’s intention of the song should be reflective of the lyrics and title. Points will be given on originality.

  • LYRICS:
  • Lyrics will be evaluated based on ability to turn simple words into visual and emotional messages. Lyrics will be penalized on the usage of trite, overused and hackneyed phrases.

  • MELODY:
  • The melody is the emotional underscore to the lyrical content and will be judged as such. Melodies that are in direct contrast to the song’s intent, non-supportive to the lyrical content, mundane or unpleasant will be penalized.

  • STRUCTURE:
  • Structure will be judged according on the basis of a commercial, radio-friendly song. Songs that have a free form structure not found in today’s pop music will be penalized.
